Wooden ship model – Robert. E. Lee With the advent of steam in the early 18th century, boats with shallow draft and large paddles were built. They were able to transport, even against the tide, both passengers and large quantities of goods. The vanes, driven by huge steam engines, could be placed at the stern or laterally on each side. These Riverboats were constantly being improved. Speed sparked some memorable competitions, with races being held to find out which was the fastest boat on the “Great River”. The most famous riverboat race took place in June 1870 from New Orleans to St. Louis between the “Natchez VI” and the “Robt. E. Lee”: 1200 miles than the “Robt. E. Lee” covered in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes, a record that has yet to be matched. The “Natchez VI” took 4 days and 51 minutes. This Atlantis series wooden ship model features a slatted hull for assembly. This model is delivered with the fittings.
